Mizzou Academy Welcomes Visiting High School Scholars from Brazil for Mizzou International Experience

On Wednesday, July 13, doctoral student Lindsey Mirielli planned to meet visiting high school scholars at the St. Louis International Airport. However, when several flights were rerouted, she had to ask the driver to turn the charter bus around and head back to Columbia. Lindsey’s bus mates included four undergraduate ambassadors and Giovanna Zulim, a visiting high school student who had met the team in St. Louis.  Mizzou International Experience Program Director Dr. Ta Boonseng was unrattled by the changing flights. “It’s just our first adventure,” he said. Connected Classrooms Book Release

Congratulations to Kathryn Fishman-Weaver and Stephanie Walter on the release of their latest book, Connected Classrooms: A People-Centered Approach for Online, Blended, and In-Person Learning (Solution Tree Press).  This new book is an important and timely resource on cultivating connection in online, blended, and global classrooms.  Kathryn Fishman-Weaver says, “After doing so much work together in curriculum development and conference planning, it has been a dream of mine to write a book with Stephanie.” The two have led conferences in the U.S., Brazil, and Vietnam and have co-written online and blended courses at the middle, high school, and collegiate…

Mizzou Academy student Ava Fleury records a perfect score on ACT test

Ava Fleury Jefferson City, Missouri, native Ava Fleury recently recorded a perfect score of 36 on the American College Test (ACT). The ACT contains four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—and an optional writing test. These tests are designed to measure skills that are most important for success in college and are typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. Fleury is only 14 and should be entering her freshman year in high school but is now set to graduate from high school next May from Mizzou Academy. Fleury currently holds a 4.0 GPA. Earlier this month, the Mizzou Academy team gathered for an enthusiastic zoom meeting. Topics ranged from programmatic celebrations, including our growing elementary program and new international interest, to more personal celebrations including family and scholarly accomplishments. Angie Hammons Celebrates 15 Years with the University of Missouri

Earlier this month, the Mizzou Academy team surprised Angie Hammons at their all-team meeting to celebrate her milestone 15-year-anniversary with the University of Missouri. Angie Hammons joined Mizzou Academy in 2018 as the Director of Curriculum and Instructional Technology. However, she has held many positions at the University, beginning in 2007 with an educational technology role at Missouri S&T. Instructional Designer Julie Phelps has been on multiple teams with Angie. She remarked, “It’s hard to believe that I’ve known you longer than 15 years! Mizzou Teacher Candidates Visit Classrooms in Brazil

ELPA 4060 is a required upper level course for teacher education candidates in the College of Education and Human Development. This semester (Spring 2022) the course is being co-taught by Dr. Kathryn Fishman-Weaver and Sarah W. Walters. The course explores legal and ethical practices in schools. Mizzou Academy has played an important role in the course this semester with faculty guests sharing best practices in blended/online instruction and connected teaching. Student Authored Magazine Highlights Community Engagement

We are overjoyed to announce the release of our first student-authored magazine, available here. With the guidance of Shivi Pandey, National Honor Society (NHS) student president, 14 National Honor Society students combined their talents, voices, and passions and published the magazine linked above. This publication focuses on student-led service initiatives related to our 2021-2022 school service theme of expanding educational access.
