Welcome to the Mizzou International Experience (MIE) Class of 2023

On Thursday, July 13, 2023, Townsend Hall was full of activity, laughter, and pizza as Mizzou Academy welcomed students, coordinators, and ambassadors for the Mizzou International Experience (MIE) program. The 2023 summer program students and ambassadors have joined us from Brazil, Spain, Ghana, and the United States.  At the Thursday Welcome Party, students heard from program leaders, including Brian Stuhlman, Dr. Ta Boonseng, and Lindsey Mirielli.   Dr. Kathryn Fishman-Weaver, the Mizzou Academy executive director, also addressed the group. At the 24th Mizzou Academy graduation ceremony on June 3, 2023, Greg Soden, a Speech and Social Studies teacher, looked out over the podium at the students in attendance with a smile. Congratulations to Megan Lilien, our Spring Honor Award Recipient

We are thrilled to celebrate our spring honor award recipient, Megan Lilien. Megan Lilien currently serves as an Instructional Designer for Mizzou Academy. Prior to that, she served for several years as our Division Chair for Science, Health, and P.E. In 2021, Lilien was named the winner of the Technology Innovator Award by the Science Teachers of Missouri (STOM).  Lilien is often cited as an “an inspiration” for her energy, enthusiasm, and intelligence. Colleagues comment on her helpfulness, creativity, intelligence, professionalism, good humor, and lively conversation. Teacher Appreciation Art Show

Demonstração de Valores Essenciais (Demonstration of Core Values) Amanda Alvarez couldn’t believe her eyes when she checked Instagram and saw one of her original paintings being celebrated at an event 5,000+ miles from home.  Alvarez serves as a middle school teacher at Colégio Dante in São Paulo, SP.  Her painting offered a fresh interpretation of the infinity symbol used to represent Autistic Pride Day. Alvarez has presented on the importance of inclusion and supporting neurodiverse learners in the classroom. Exhibit Description: View a collection of literary and arts integration projects led by Dr. Kathryn Fishman-Weaver. Special Series for Child Abuse Prevention Month This month, Grade 8 students in our Mizzou Global Scholars course studied the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1989. This international agreement on childhood addresses the universal and unique rights children should have. Special Series for Child Abuse Prevention Month Since 1983, April has been recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month across the United States. This month-long advocacy and educational outreach campaign has a long history. In 1974, the first federal child protection legislation, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA, was passed. Jacquelyn Kay, Celebrating 20 Years of Service With the University of Missouri

Jacquelyn Kay is known across Mizzou for her adventuring spirit, love of world languages, and commitment to excellence. Recently, Kay’s colleagues at Mizzou Academy celebrated her 20 years of service to Mizzou. A Background in World Languages Some members of the Mizzou community may recognize Kay for her many years as a Spanish instructor with the university. She also has led numerous study abroad programs to Latin America. Nick Oswald, Celebrating 15 Years of Service to the University of Missouri

Nick Oswald’s career within the UM System began at Missouri S&T where he worked in MinerTech at the bookstore. In that role, he supported students with their computer questions and challenges. Our Director of Curriculum and IT, Angie Hammons, first met him while working in this role, and she quickly recruited him for her EdTech group at Missouri S&T.  In 2019, Hammons was again able to bring Oswald back to her team, this time at Mizzou Academy.  As an instructional developer for Mizzou Academy, Oswald helps the team of designers with technology and curriculum integration.  Oswald’s educational background…
